BioCote antimicrobial additive isn’t just working in our iPhone and iPad Cases it’s caring for your Kitty and Pooches microbiome too!!!
Many of our iPhone Case and iPad Case owners are mad about their pets and animal welfare in general and purchase their iPhone and iPad case from our ranges that are “Approved for Vegans” by both PETA and VegSoc.
So, when we read this blog, we were keen to share it with our case and pet lovers.
Did you know that there are about ten times more bacteria in and on our bodies than our own cells? And this does not just apply to humans, but also our pets at home. Our pets have all kinds of microorganisms living within its their ecosystem. This microscopic community inhabiting our pets’ ecosystem is known as a microbiome. Two trusted BioCote® partners, Rosewood Pets and HOWND, have made it their goal to provide antimicrobial pet toys and dog bowls respectively to help support good hygiene for our pets.
What exactly is a microbiome?
The microbiome is made up of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa living within our pets’ bodies. Those microorganisms have a symbiotic relationship and affect the overall health and wellbeing of our pets. The majority live in the gut and support normal bodily functions, and they can be essential to a pet’s immune system.
Every microbiome is unique. Dogs and cats start developing a microbiome right after birth, which is created from the microorganisms of their mother and the surrounding environment. During growth, the composition and diversity of their microbiome changes and matures. It is affected by things they come into contact with, such as food, the environment and even by their owners – this is the reason why a dog’s microbiome is more similar to the human microbiome than that of pigs or mice for example (unless you keep pigs and mice as your pets that is).
The microbiome has an effect on almost every tissue of the pet’s body, playing a significant role in their overall health. Microbiome communities differ depending on the habitat, such as the skin, lungs or gut, requiring different approaches to promote good bacteria and prevent the growth of bad bacteria. For instance, gut bacteria may synthesise vitamins and vital amino acids to help prevent diseases from manifesting, strengthening the immune system.
Caring for the microbiome
Nutrition and diets are deeply connected to the health and population of our pet’s microbiome. It is really sensitive, and an unbalanced microbiome can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, changes of appetite or skin and behavioural problems, among others.
An experiment carried out in 2008 on the effect of food on the microbiome showed how human microbiome transplanted to mice changed significantly in less than a day by just modifying the diet. Consequently, properly feeding and caring for our pets promotes a balanced microbiome, essential for their immunity, inflammation and overall wellbeing.
Antimicrobial technology to support pet hygiene
Given how many external factors can influence a pet’s microbiome, it’s crucial to keep their environment clean and hygienic. BioCote® has been working with manufacturers, like Rosewood Pets and HOWND, in the pet industry to integrate antimicrobial additives into materials used for pet toys and accessories.
